The 2027 Godavari Pushkaralu will be held from July 23 to August 3, 2027.  East Godavari District preparing for this 12-yearly festival, planning major infrastructure developments like new ghats, temple upgrades, and improved facilities for an anticipated influx of millions of devotees.  The district aim to host the event on a scale comparable to the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Key preparations and plans

Infrastructure: Significant new permanent Pushkar ghats will be constructed, and existing ones will be repaired and upgraded. Road, sanitation, and other urban development projects are planned, particularly in major areas like Rajamahendravaram and Kovvuru.

Pilgrim facilities: The focus is on creating sustainable living spaces for devotees, including facilities for short stays and homestays, in an effort to manage the large crowds. Medical camps will also be organized.

Logistics and security: Plans include creating buffer zones, managing traffic, and utilizing technology like AI for security and crowd control, according to The Hindu and Deccan Chronicle.

Government involvement: Both states have formed committees, including a Group of Ministers in Andhra Pradesh, to coordinate the extensive efforts across multiple departments like irrigation, endowments, and tourism.

Cultural importance: The festival is a major religious event for millions of devotees who take a holy dip in the Godavari river, believed to provide the merit of bathing in 12 other rivers over 12 years.

“South India’s Kumbh Mela”: Leaders have referred to the event as the “Kumbh Mela of South India” due to its scale and the vast number of pilgrims it attracts.
